Difficult Interview Question and the Flaw of Desperation
We hear it on every interview. It’s almost as certain as death and taxes. “Tell me about yourself”. We should be used to it by now but the truth is that answering this question wrong can be lethal. Once again DiceTV’s Cat Miller walks us through this extremely important interview question. This is a question that should be thought through way before the interview. You want to avoid rambling and ideally don’t use more than about two minutes when giving your response. The employer is just trying to piece together if you are a good candidate for the position. In your response you want to include who you are and where you’re going. Try suggesting briefly why the opening is a good step for you. Next you want to mention past career experiences that are relevant to the position your applying. Focus on achievements rather than just job functions. Cat Miller gives good advice and is looking out for our best interest. Read the article at http://career-resources.dice.com/articles/content/entry/how_to_answer_tell_me1?cmpid=117
It may seem bluntly obvious to not say “I’ll take anything” during a job interview, but it happens and it will kill you every time. It implies that you are not committed and are really just settling. Cat Miller from DiceTV helps us see the devastation of sounding desperate, which a lot of us are. You want to let the interviewer know that you are a good fit for the position and being cool will score you major points. This also means your excitement level can’t be over the top. Always make sure you return phone calls and emails promptly or you will miss out and be confident not desperate because it is your best advantage. I recently read a book that had a quote from Thomas Jefferson. “Remain calm and cool in every situation at all times”. I have made it motto for myself as this theory proves to be long lasting and it works. Even if you are desperate, and believe me I know how you feel, you don’t have to let it show. You are better than that.
Happy Job Hunting
